To be eligible for Zip, you must:
Live in New Zealand
Be at least 18 years old
Be able to enter into a legally binding contract
Have a valid NZ Driver's Licence or another accepted form of ID
Have a valid and verifiable email address and NZ mobile number
Have an NZ-issued debit or credit card
We do accept NZ and Australian passports, foreign passports (with a valid visa), Kiwi Access and 18+ cards (with a copy of your birth certificate) as proof of identity.
How to apply
You can create a Zip account:
Via the Apply Now link on our website
Through the Zip app (iOS or Android)
By selecting Zip at checkout and signing up there
When you apply, we’ll ask for:
Your full legal name
Your date of birth
Your residential address
Your NZ Driver Licence number*
Your NZ debit or credit card details
Zip completes a credit check for all new customers during registration. You’ll also be asked to verify your ID.
Once your credit check and ID verification are complete, we’ll let you know your approved spend limit.
In most cases, this happens instantly*. If approved, you’ll confirm your payment schedule and we’ll debit your first instalment at checkout.
*If you don’t have an NZ Driver Licence, select “I don’t have a NZ Driver Licence” during the ID step. Our team will manually verify your approved photo ID. This can take up to 48 hours.
When you apply, please make sure:
Your details are accurate (full legal name, date of birth, and residential address)
Your name matches your ID exactly
You don’t already have a Zip account (if you do, please contact us)
If you have trouble signing up or completing ID verification, submit a request with a copy of the required documents and we’ll help verify your account.
