After careful consideration, we've made the difficult decision to withdraw from the New Zealand market and will be ceasing to offer the Zip Pay in 4 product.
We know you may have questions about what this means for your account, so we've answered the most common ones below.
Why is Zip leaving New Zealand?
After careful consideration, we've made the difficult decision to withdraw from the New Zealand market.
We're no longer offering Zip Pay in 4 in New Zealand for new purchases or new customers.
When is Zip Pay in 4 closing in New Zealand?
Your Spend Limit will reduce to $0.00 on 16 August 2026 at 11:59pm NZST.
From 17 August 2026, you won't be able to make any new purchases using your Zip Pay in 4 account.
Can I still use my Zip account?
Yes, new purchases will be processed until 16 August 2026 at 11:59pm NZST on 16 August 2026, provided you have available Spend Limit.
From 17 August 2026, you won't be able to make any new purchases. After 17 August 2026, you can still log in to the Zip app to:
- View your payment schedule.
- Make your scheduled repayments.
- Make early repayments if you'd like to pay off your balance sooner.
Do I still need to repay my balance?
Yes.
Although Zip is no longer accepting new purchases, any purchases you complete using your Zip Pay in 4 Account will need to be repaid on the dates shown in your account dashboard until your outstanding balance has been paid in full.
Can I pay my balance off early?
Yes.
You can make additional payments or repay your outstanding balance in full at any time by logging in to your account.
Do I need to change my payment method?
No.
If you already have a payment method linked to your account, your scheduled repayments will continue as normal unless you update or remove it.
Will Zip closing affect my credit score?
No.
Zip's decision to withdraw from the New Zealand market won't affect your credit score.
However, if you miss repayments or default on your account, this may be reported to the credit bureau and could negatively affect your credit score or your ability to obtain credit, including loans or mortgages, in the future.
What happens if I return an item after Zip closes?
Retailers will continue to manage returns in line with their own returns policies.
Until 5 October 2026, if you're eligible for a refund, it will be applied to your Zip Account in the usual way. If you've already repaid your balance in full, any remaining refund will be processed in line with our standard refund process and applied to the payment method in your account.
After 5 October 2026, you should contact your retailer directly to process any refunds directly to you in line with the retailer’s return policy.
Can I still raise a dispute or transaction enquiry?
Yes.
If you need help with an existing purchase or transaction, you can continue to contact our Customer Experience team.
Will my payment schedule change?
No.
The closure of Zip Pay in 4 doesn't change:
- Any amounts you currently owe.
- Your scheduled payment dates.
- The amounts due under your existing payment schedule.
You'll need to continue making repayments as scheduled until your balance is paid in full.
Will I still be able to access my account?
Yes.
You'll continue to be able to log in to the Zip app to view your account, payment schedule and repayment history while your account remains active.
What happens if I repay my balance before 16 August 2026?
After 16 August 2026, once you've repaid your outstanding balance in full, we may close your account.
What happens once I've paid my balance in full?
Once you've repaid everything you owe, we may close your Zip Pay in 4 account. You will no longer be able to use Zip to make any new purchases after 16 August 2026.
What happens if I make a late payment?
We don’t charge any fees or interest if you pay early or on time.
If you miss a scheduled instalment:
A $10 default fee is added to your account
Your spending will be paused until your overdue payments are made
An additional $10 fee is applied for each week the payment remains unpaid
Late fees are capped at $40 per order.
We encourage you to bring your payments up to date as soon as possible to avoid further fees.
If payments continue to be missed, your account may be referred to a collections agency and this could negatively impact your credit score.
Can I reopen my account or apply for a new one?
No.
As we're withdrawing from the New Zealand market, we're no longer able to reopen closed accounts or process new applications.
What if I'm already applying for a Zip account?
If you started an application but didn't complete it before our withdrawal from the New Zealand market, we're unable to continue processing your application.
If you've already provided identity documents as part of your application, they'll be handled in line with our Privacy Policy and applicable legal requirements.
Can I still contact Zip for support?
Yes.
